III. Problems with Particle and Collapse Interpretations.
Awareness Is Not Based in the Brain
For scientists and the adventurous nonscientist
In section IIIA, we show there is no experimental evidence for particles—electrons, photons and so on. The severe difficulties encountered in attempting to construct particle and collapse interpretations are given in section IIIB. We then show in section IIIC that no particles and no collapse rigorously implies that awareness is not based in the physical brain. A nonphysical "Mind" interpretation, built on this conclusion, is given in section IIIE.
A. No Evidence for Particles.
- Introduction.
- The classically particlelike properties of mass, spin, energy, momentum, and charge are actually properties of the wave function.
- Perception of only one of the many states allowed by quantum mechanics follows from quantum mechanics alone. Also, quantum mechanics alone implies that observers agree on the perceived state.
- Neither the photoelectric effect nor the Compton effect provides evidence for particles.
- Neither localization, in which a spread-out wave function produces local effects, nor particlelike trajectories provides evidence for particles.
- The discrete nature of matter provides no evidence for particles.
- The Bell-Aspect experiment.
B. Difficulties in Attempting to Amend Quantum Mechanics.
- Introduction. Weaknesses of quantum mechanics. Need for something besides quantum mechanics.
- The Bohm model of particles is not valid.
- No objective reality.
- Problems with mathematical collapse models. Includes a proposed experimental test for collapse.
- Problems with consciousness-induced collapse models.
C. No Particles and No Collapse Implies The Awareness Is Not Based in the Physical Brain. The Everett Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.
We give a proof that awareness is not based in the physical brain. This involves showing that the Everett interpretation is not valid.
D. Summary.
A good starting point for those already conversant with quantum mechanics.
E. The Mind Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.
Only the noncollapsed wave function physically exists. A nonphysical Mind perceives just one version of the brain-body. Includes a proposed experimental test for the existence of an objective reality. Sections 1 through 5 for nonscientists.
